November 18, 2013

All,

I'm assuming it's been a busy week as there was no email waiting for me in my inbox, what's going on?

We have had another week pass in La Jungla. The high points were that The V---'s were baptized, sort of, the wife felt, indispuesto (indisposed) yesterday, so we had 3 baptisms, of which I did none, :'(. But, they're baptized so I'll take it. Plus, because she didn't get baptized, the other 2 kids who turn 8 in a month will also count as convert baptisms. which I'll also take. However, that's about all we've got here in La Jungla, as R------'s Significant Other, Jésus, ironically enough, has said that the next time he sees us he's going to "run at us". No me gusta. He's very amicable to us to our faces, but he hates us behind our back. He's the first Hispanic who's hiding something like that that I've met. Normally they're more open about it than we gringos.

That is highly annoying particularly as we invited him to a lesson about Christ and why he's important in our lives, and he said no, as a Catholic, he said no. It's so annoying.

Adding to the annoyance is the fact that they're really our only family at the moment aside from Los V---.We've got almost nothing to do, as almost all of the buildings in the Jungle are "Closed to the Public" so we can't tract, and all of the potentials we've tried are not interested or have moved. It's enough to drive someone crazy.

However, I trust that the Lord has a plan and knows what he's doing, as he's done this before. All we have to do is resurrect La Jungla, and we'll go down in history as the Elders who Changed La Jungla.

Anyway, enough on that unpleasantness. Earlier today, we went to a morning side with Chad Lewis, A former NFL Tight End, which was sweet. He said several things that were interesting, at least to me. First is that we are "the Sound of Freedom". We missionaries are the Sound of Freedom and bondage from a World of Sin. A World that batters us and tries to destroy us, and in some cases succeeds. We are a beacon of hope, a standard of Light. We are the people who invite others to "come and learn of me for I am meek and lowly of heart. Take my yoke upon you, for my yoke is easy and my burden light." We have an obligation to do so, as we have been blessed with understanding, and light, therefore.... We must share it.

The other thing he said is that "to be great, you need to have a high tolerance for boredom." How many times do we find that we are being taught the same thing over and over and over. How many times are we taught that you need to live the law of Chastity, or that you need to pay tithing, or that obedience brings blessings as demonstrated by the 2000 warriors, or that you need to forget yourself and go to work, as demonstrated by President Hinckley. It's the same things over and over and over. The gospel is about becoming and you don't become until you understand the basics. I was once told the "deep doctrine is understanding the basics in a deep way". Same principle. How many times do we learn the same thing, you need to go back and learn again and again and again, as that is how we receive the blessings of exaltation.

Also, I'm sorry I didn't send a written letter last week, I was going to do it after we emailed, but we ended up going to the palisades to take pictures so I was unable to as we got back to the apartment at 5:57 and we needed to start working in 3 min. I'll send those photos next week, as I don't have my cable with me to transfer them. Again, my apologies.

That's the week.
